Five New Sports Join the Series: GAA Football, Hurling, Boxing, Netball and Surfing
When we opened up custom commissions last year, we said the most common question we get is "do you have a book for our sport?" Five of the answers changed this month.
GAA Football, Hurling, Boxing, Netball and Surfing To Succeed are now part of the Sports & Fitness series, taking it to 46 titles. All five follow the same structure as the rest of the series: technical skills with common fault corrections, position-by-position detail, conditioning and injury prevention, the competitive pathway, and a chapter written for parents who do not play the sport themselves.
GAA Football To Succeed (92 pages)
The core skills first — the solo run, kick-passing, catching under pressure and shooting — each with the faults we see most often at underage level and how to correct them. Then legal tackling, blocking and defensive shape, every position from full-back to full-forward, and the club-to-county underage pathway explained properly rather than assumed.
Ladies Gaelic Football and the LGFA are covered throughout the book rather than added as a closing chapter. That was a deliberate decision and we would make it again.
Hurling To Succeed (97 pages, 30 chapters)
Hurling is the hardest sport in this batch to teach from a book, because so much of it is first touch. We spent the technical chapters accordingly: ground hurling, lifting, striking off both sides, and the touch work that everything else depends on. Blocking and hooking get their own treatment, as does the conditioning and hand-eye speed work the game demands.
Camogie and the female pathway have a dedicated chapter.
Netball To Succeed (100 pages)
All seven positions, role by role, from Goal Shooter to Goal Keeper — because netball is the sport in this series where position most completely defines what a player needs to practise. Passing, catching, shooting and footwork with fault corrections, centre-pass attacking structures, defensive strategy, and the full England Netball and Netball Ireland pathway from a first club session to international honours.
Boxing To Succeed (93 pages)
Stance and footwork before anything else, then the jab, cross, hook and uppercut and the combinations that follow from them. Defence gets equal weight — guard, slipping, rolling and what safe sparring actually looks like at underage level. The IABA and England Boxing amateur pathways, gradings and competition structures are set out in full, alongside safeguarding and concussion protocols.
This is a junior boxing book written by people who take the safety chapter as seriously as the technique chapters.
Surfing To Succeed (114 pages)
Ocean safety comes first: reading waves, understanding rip currents and building genuine water confidence before a board is involved. Then paddling, the pop-up and turning, with a full progression from white water to barrel riding, plus board, wetsuit and safety-gear selection for cold water and the ISA and Surfing Ireland pathway.
The cold-water chapter is the one that makes this book different. It is built around the Wild Atlantic Way and British surf beaches — not warm-water beginner conditions that bear no resemblance to a February session in Donegal.
All five are written to the same standard as the rest of the series and sit alongside the 41 sports titles already there.
